Is marriage insignificant according to Jesus?

The passage for my lent study this past Saturday was Luke 20:27-40. I had to re-read it a few times in an attempt to really grasp what was really going on here. I’ve been wrestling with this passage for the past few days and thought It’s time to crowd-source some responses & ideas.

The passage begins with the Sadducees asking Jesus a question about marriage, in an attempt to catch him misinterpret Scripture or state wrong responses. However, Jesus replies with:

The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage… (v. 34-35)

Does this mean that in Heaven, our spouses will be insignificant because we will no longer be married? I know of the countless other passages in the Bible that discuss the sanctity of marriage, and the importance of a marriage union, but it seems that Jesus is explaining that it won’t matter in Heaven.

What are your thoughts on this? How do you interpret this passage and what Christ is saying here?
